A Packet service is a regular, scheduled service, carrying freight and passengers. The ships used for this service are called Packet ships or Packet boats, the seamen Packetmen and the business is called Packet trade.
The word wee packet in laymans terms means small ship. Packet ships were used to deliver goods to the Cape & Islands. The height of the Cape Cod packets spanned most of the 19th century.
